The latter seems a better fit for Mac. After leading the way to his studio via the kitchen and the pool surrounded by ashtrays piled with fag ends , the year-old curls up, legs crossed in the opposite direction, as far away as possible on the other end of a couch. At times he lights a cigarette and then crosses his arms while inhaling, his shoulder turned towards the door. What does that look like? But I remember being stressed out mixing it, I tell you. Is there self-doubt? Do you feel like you have to do something unexpected? Uhm, maybe. Even with this.
His style of music has been described as "blue wave" and "slacker rock", or, by DeMarco himself, "jizz jazz". He attended McKernan School for junior high. Around this time he started playing guitar, with lessons from his grandmother. After graduating from Strathcona High School in Edmonton in , he became a backing musician. After that, he moved to Vancouver. Living in the Killarney neighbourhood, he released a self-produced album, Heat Wave , as a part of the indie rock project Makeout Videotape in The album sold out its unit run. Failing to find work as a musician, he participated in medical experiments for money and worked on a road paving crew. The four-track-recorded album features skits and slowed-down vocals.
Mac DeMarco is hanging out at home in Los Angeles, playing video games on the couch, when he picks up the phone. This might be the most Mac DeMarco way possible to begin a conversation. His unflappably chill folk-rock tunes, laced with a surreal sense of humor, have made the Canadian singer-songwriter an unlikely star. Take the title track, which started as a twangy guitar part that tumbled out when he was messing around in his garage last year. He was on a short break from the road at the time, stealing a few days between the lengthy full-band tour for his LP This Old Dog and a more intimate solo jaunt. The rest of the album came together in January, with DeMarco working late into the night almost entirely on his own, a habit that dates back to the beginning of his career.
LOS ANGELES — Before Mac DeMarco bought a lovely blue home with a pool on a quiet hill here in Silver Lake — the first real adult spoils of a surprising career built on seeming like an affable deadbeat — he gave out his exact address to fans, not exactly expecting them to show up in droves. His place, a four-bedroom on the beach in Far Rockaway, Queens, was relatively secluded, directly across Jamaica Bay from Kennedy International Airport. DeMarco recalled recently as he chain-smoked Marlboro Reds in his new backyard, surrounded by overflowing ashtrays and discarded cans of beer and seltzer. I really liked it. DeMarco said, insisting that the impetuous stunt did not lead to any negative experiences and only brought him closer to his fan base.
