You want to update your space. You have the will, the vision, the Pinterest boards and no less than17 wishlists in your browser bookmarks. What you don’t have is the money. Womp womp.
Fear not, oh broke design-lovers! There’s a ton of budget-friendly stores to find awesome home stuff, and we are not talking about the Dollar Store or anything like it. Here’s 12 great places to find stuff for your house, without having to live on ramen noodles for dinner for a month.
There’s a lot to love about Fab.com, but our favorite is the price slider. You set it to your maximum price and it will only show you items at or below that price. We set it to bucks and so many awesome home items showed up, from amazing Walls Need Love wall decals to super chic bedding and fun stuff like hamburger pillows. Lots of things have been reduced so you’re getting real bargains, plus Fab’s fun aesthetic means you’ll never find a blah item anywhere on the site. So good.
Remember when Amazon was just books? Now you can buy everything from vitamins to Vitamix and you will be astonished at how affordable everything is. There’s sofabeds for under 0 and, gasp, they’re cute. Basically everything you need for life is on Amazon and you can get rad home accessories like vases, trays, string lights, pillows, throws etc for super duper cheap. The rug selection is impressive with everything from traditional to Turkish, and the cherry on top of course is the fact that everything is delivered right to your door. For those who aren’t handy, Amazon offers an assembly service too. Our tip? Read the reviews and only purchase items that seem easy to put together. After many a frustrating hour in a new apartment wielding and Allen key, we’ve learned our lesson.
Most of the décor and furniture on this site is made to order, so may take a little longer to ship than some other sites. However, there is such a massive inventory, they do have many items in stock and ready to ship. One genius piece we stumbled across is the Platform Conversion Kit in which you order a plain box spring and District 17 will create a cover in the fabric of your choice, plus supply two low-elevation slats so it doesn’t have that ‘box spring on the floor’ look. Such a great concept for an affordable, custom bed. Some people just aren’t into bedframes, and you know what? That’s okay.
The specialty of Dormify may be dorm stuff, but let’s not put it in such a restrictive box okay? The company not only creates its own line of bedding and pillows, the store offers a range of quirky functional-yet-cute brands to help with organization and chic travel goods. Much of what you get will work from your home bedroom to your dorm and first apartment, so when you’re trying to figure out if you should invest in a piece of art on canvas, rest assured you’ll probably have it beyond graduation. By the same token, if you’re fickle when it comes to what goes on your wall, there’s a bunch of really rad wall decals that you can replace at your will. Side note: always check out the sale section – it has MAJOR deals
There are so many incredibly cheap items at H&M home you’ll end up doing that thing where you add a million things to your basket and then you get to check out and you’re like ‘uh, okay I’m buying too much’. Actually, you’re not. The stuff may be cheap, but it certainly doesn’t look it. There’s a myriad glass vases, tealight holders and more that have a distinctly flea market aesthetic and not in a ‘faux distressed’ way. In a good way. We are in love with the outdoor accessories – the patterned pastel picnic cups and plates are just more chic than your average Dixie cup moment and in terms of accessories, the ceramics are giving Jonathan Adler a run for his money. Prices start at.95. What the hell else can you get for that price?
Joss & Main
Joss & Main is kind of like a treasure trove in that you browse around a bunch of highly discounted things and can happen upon awesome things. There’s no traditional way to shop by category, instead they create categories such as ‘Memorial Day Countdown’ or ‘The Graduation Shop’ and you sift through the deals in those sections. They do have Bed & Bath and Kitchen shops but again, there are no specific sections to select say, sheets or whatever. It feels more like shopping a Pinterest board, and although not the most efficient, definitely has the feel of wandering around a store without leaving your seat.
While technically a craft store, Michael’s gives other homewares stores a run for their money with it’s vast selection of useful home items. The framing section is gigantic, and you can have custom frames made and mats cut for your needs. While you can’t buy a blanket, you can certainly buy the wool or yarn you need to knit one by yourself, and there’s a huge variety of basic accents ready for customization. The best part about shopping at Michael’s for your home is that you’re creating your own look, so you’re guaranteed to end up with a more unique look. Bonus: unleashing your creativity will make you so happy too, and its DIY section tells you what you need for a bunch of projects, including these gorge soda bottles.
The vintage vibe of Modcloth is instantly apparent from it’s fit-and-flare dresses to pin-up girl swimsuits and of course, its completely adorable homewares. There’s a healthy fascination with toadstools (they’re part of the Modcloth identity) as well as weird and wonderful random bits like an otter tape dispenser and lots of woodland creature-themed items such as hedgehog-shaped Q-tip holders and beaver pencil sharpeners. Yes, it’s all cute, no it’s not childish. It’s adult whimsy at it’s finest. Plus there’s an Under section. Not mad at that.
One Kings Lane
It’s impossible not to love One Kings Lane. Sure there’s relatively expensive items (even at a huge discount) but no matter what your budget, you will find beautiful items to furnish and accessorize your home. The Thrills section is where you’ll find the newest and most inexpensive pieces, from copper lanterns to ceramic planters to decorative bowls and basically everything you need to make your place look ready for a magazine shoot at all times. To sum it up: it’s fabulous. Darling.
This is without a doubt one of the best affordable places to shop for home. Sure, you can find extreme dorm moments like drinking games and such, but you can also actually find really cool items that will last longer than a few weeks. From boho wall tapestries and bedding to mid-century modern furniture to playful kitchenware and accessories, you could probably outfit your entire space from Urban Outfitters and make it look like you’d thoughtfully curated your space over several years as opposed to one ham session with your credit card online.
You may not have heard of Tiger just yet, since its first store is opening next month in New York City, but basically you’re going to love it. It’s kind of like a chic dollar store but sells clothing basics and the most playful homewares imaginable. Tiger’s a legit phenomenon in Europe, where people live for its storage options and lolz kitchenware. Amazingly, 90% of items in the store will be under and a bunch are actually under 10 bucks. The store opens May 16 on Broadway in New York, but you can already preview the kind of stuff that will be on sale at Tiger-stores.com
Zara takes the exact same approach to its homewares as it does to its clothing, focusing on current trends with a dash of basics. Spring for example, includes a heavy Moroccan influence from graphic printed bedding to hammered metal elements and of course they got right on that tropical leaf train with bedding, tablecloths and lampshades. The best part is by far the affordability: furniture begins around. And it’s gorgeous.
